44 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. 45 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. 46 Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it. 47 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes. 48 Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth. 49 So shall it be at the end of the world. Matthew 13 is one long day of parables by the sea. The crowds get stories; the Twelve get the meaning in the house. These last three — the treasure, the pearl, the net — close the set, and Jesus asks his men point-blank: Have ye understood all these things?
T3WHAT IT DEMANDS
The man does not sell the farm through gritted teeth. He sells it for joy — he has seen what is buried, and nothing he owns compares. If the faith feels like a tax, you have not dug where he dug.
The ploughman trips over the treasure; the merchant spends his life hunting the pearl. Christ honours both roads. Both end at the same counter, and the price at that counter is all.
The dragnet hauls in everything, good and bad together, and the sorting belongs to angels at the end of the world. Your work at the table is to haul with your brothers — not to grade them.
The scribe instructed in the kingdom brings out of his treasure new things and old. Bring both on Sunday: the Church’s long memory, and what God did in your week.

c. 349–407. Fifteen centuries before your table, a bishop told working men exactly what this Sunday asks: the price of the pearl is everything.
You already know your field. Name the thing you have refused to sell — that is the price written on it.
Who needs to be heard tonight? Let a brother go first.
Lord Jesus, You hid the kingdom where working men could find it. Open our eyes tonight, give us the joy that sells everything, and make this table honest. Amen.

The kingdom is bought with joy, not gritted teeth.

Pick a rhythm the standing tables already prove out: weekly or every other week, Tuesday or Thursday evening, Friday or Saturday morning. A parish hall, a kitchen, a garage. Sixty to ninety minutes. Same time, same place — consistency is what makes it a table and not an event.

Six men carry a casket. Ask yourself, plainly, whether you could name six who would carry yours — and who would be honoured to. Most men can name two or three. That gap is not a verdict on you. It is your mission for the next year.
